Dr Duncan Curley has a PhD from University College London in biochemistry and synthetic organic chemistry. He trained and qualified as a solicitor in 1995 at the multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He practised for two years at the litigation specialist firm Herbert Smith, before moving to McDermott Will & Emery in 2000 to assist in the establishment of their Intellectual Property Department in London. He was made a partner at McDermott Will & Emery in 2003. Duncan founded Innovate Legal in 2007.

During his career, Duncan has specialised in resolving patent disputes, particularly in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector. He has advised on claims before the Patents Court of the High Court of England and Wales, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court (previously the House of Lords). He also has experience of international arbitration work.

Duncan is a regular contributor to public policy debates on intellectual property issues. He is the author of the leading textbook on the European Patent Licensing Block Exemption Regulation and a Report (for the Intellectual Property Institute) on Supplementary Protection Certificates, (EU patent extensions). He is a Member of the Laws Committee of the Licensing Executives Society (Britain and Ireland) and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).
